Prose & Poetry Reading with John Bates and Elizabeth Tornes

The Walter E. Olson Memorial Library welcomes Minocqua authors, John Bates and Elizabeth Tornes, for a special reading from a selection of their prose and poetry centered around four themes – elders, trees, birds and water.
John Bates is the author of nine books and a contributor to seven others, all of which focus on the natural history of the Northwoods. His most recent nonfiction work is Our Living Ancestors: The History and Ecology of Old-Growth Forests in Wisconsin and Where to Find Them. His poetry has been published in the Oxford Magazine, Wisconsin Academy Review, Albatross, The Northern Review and in five science-art exhibits. John’s book of poetry, Cold to the Bone, was released in 2017.
Elizabeth Tornes has published three award-winning poetry collections, Between the Dog and the Wolf, New Moon and Snowbound. Her poems have been appeared widely in journals and anthologies including Ariel Anthology, Blue Heron Review, Boulevard, Bramble, Main Street Rag, The North American Review, Up North Lit and Yellow Medicine Review. She holds a Ph.D. in Creative Writing from the University of Utah. She has also published a collection of Ojibwe oral histories, Memories of Lac du Flambeau Elders and lives in Lac du Flambeau, WI.
