Special Veteran’s Day Book Discussion: The Things They Carried
November 5, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Join us at Olson Memorial Library for a relaxing evening discussing and sharing your thoughts about “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien. The discussion honors preparation of our hearts and minds for Veterans Day and is facilitated by local resident, Pastor Ric Jacobsen. Where do we as Americans put this piece of history in our own lives today? What was Vietnam to us and how do we deal with that even now?
Ric Jacobsen bio: Recently retired as a pastor with the Evangelical Free and United Methodist Churches. Author of The Spirit of Tocayo (1997) and numerous published articles. Married to Joy Jacobsen (native of New Zealand) with two married son and daughter and proud gramps to 5 great kids. Ric and Joy lived 14 years in Brazil. Besides theology, Ric studied Anthropology and intercultural communications. Ric is addicted to reading and discussing good literature.
Attendees are encouraged to read the book but it is not mandatory since the discussion will be wide-ranging. Copies may be borrowed from the Merlin catalog and are available in a variety of formats, including audio, digital and print copies.
More about the book: Tim O’Brien’s second work of fiction about Vietnam is neither a novel nor a short story collection, it is an arc of fictional episodes, taking place in the childhoods of its characters, in the jungles of Vietnam and back home in America two decades later.
Light refreshments and beverages will be available. Free event sponsored by the library Friends, W.O. L. F.For more information, contact the library at 479-8070.
